When you hear “ US Virgin Islands,” you immediately think of pristine, turquoise beaches, serene landscapes, and a no-frills atmosphere that forces you to unplug. You would be absolutely right, but there is so much more to “America’s Paradise” than meets the eye. Undoubtedly, it is a treasure, but here are our favorite reasons why you should have visited (multiple times) the US Virgin Islands.
Food is Life
The US Virgin Islands is considered the melting pot of the Caribbean. With its locale nestled between the lesser and greater Antilles and hosting one of the busiest natural deep harbors in the Caribbean, it has become home to many nationalities and cultures, making the food scene as unique as each of its islands. With influences from French, Spanish, English, and Asian cultures, you can find a dish that satisfies even the most indecisive palette. The local food scene is constantly thriving and increasingly innovative. Virgin Islanders are creative and adventurous, putting their spin on traditionally disciplined fare such as sushi, tapas, and bar grub. Our favorites and soon to be yours:
Let us not forget to mention the fantastic food festivals that bring people by the boatload (literally)! Food has long been a mainstay in welcoming others, communication, fundraising, and celebrations. The USVI has food festivals that draw in Virgin Islanders near and far, visitors from stateside and other Caribbean nations and countries. These festivals celebrate our diverse culture and raise money to support local organizations, farmers, and artisans. Here are our faves:
Celebrations are the Tapestry
The Virgin Islands is the only Caribbean destination that boasts three carnival celebrations! We have three reasons to fete, all of which are worth a commotion. Whether you usher in the holidays celebrating the festival in St. Croix, take a much-needed spring break enjoying Carnival in St. Thomas, or celebrate history and independence on St. John, you are bound to have an experience like no other.
And it’s not just Carnival and festivals. As the cultural melting pot of the Caribbean, there are celebrations for the many people that call the US Virgin Islands home. Bastille Day celebrations honor the French heritage that is as vibrant as the madras we style. Virgin Islands-Puerto Rico Friendship Day honors the Borinquen culture and our shared ties in nationality, culture, and history. We have something for everyone, and we welcome others to share it.
The People, #DasItDasAll
This is by far our favorite reason yet! You cannot and will not find a better set of exciting, adventurous, animated, and beautiful people than you would in the USVI! We may be a bit biased, but we tell no lies. When you visit, the people of the Virgin Islands spare no method in ensuring you enjoy what the islands offer. The only rule: come in and don’t start no mess! No, seriously, you can enjoy all the good vibes, food and drink, and experiences they offer, but if you are the type that travels on some entitled holier-than-thou attitude, it may not be for you. Virgin Islanders are notoriously honest and protective, and for a good reason. So do not pull up if you are going to disrupt a good time.
We will not tell you what to do, but we strongly recommend booking your ticket soon; come for the vibe, stay for the food, and relish the experience.
