A Celebration for Black Women’s History Month

Hello, April! Hello, Spring! Hello, Black Women’s History Month! As we usher in the beauty and newness of the season, we get to recognize and celebrate the amazing and unlimited contributions that black women have made to the culture throughout history. #SITIGirlVI would like to acknowledge and appreciate the significant contributions of Black women throughout history. In every field, from activism to literature, science to art, we have made a lasting impact on our culture and society.

As we celebrate, let’s honor some of the incredible women who have paved the way for the free thinkers, artists, scientists, and changemakers who are still leaving their mark on the cultural tapestry:

  • Activist and writer Audre Lorde, co-organizer of the Women’s Coalition in St. Croix, spoke out about the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality and fought for social justice throughout her life.
  • Katherine Johnson was a mathematician and computer programmer whose remarkable work at NASA played a vital role in the first moon landing.
  • Toni Morrison, a celebrated author whose award-winning novels delved into the intricacies of Black life and identity.
  • Kara Walker is an artist who uses her controversial and thought-provoking pieces to challenge conventional notions of race and history.

This is a short list of the names that stretch beyond physical limits, have left an indelible mark on history, and have not wholly unfolded their stories. We have shown incredible resilience and strength despite facing systemic obstacles and discrimination. We have fought tirelessly for our rights and the rights of others, inspiring others with our tenacity and determination.

Beyond remarkable intellectual success, we continue to demonstrate a unique nurturing ability that is truly unmatched. We have been caretakers in our families and communities, providing love, support, and guidance to those around us. We have been at the forefront of social justice movements, fighting for civil rights and equality for all. We have been trailblazers in science, technology, and business, breaking down barriers and shattering stereotypes. Despite significant challenges and systemic barriers, we continued to rise above adversity and thrive in a world that wants to see us crumble.

The power of our resiliency and determination is unmatched. But this Black Women’s History Month, let us remember that we deserve to indulge in softness and self-care as a luxury, not a privilege. We deserve our flowers and cheers. We deserve to be uplifted and gifted and not taken for granted. We deserve to be seen, heard, and valued as the priceless culture bearers that we are. Given the world’s tendency to overlook and undervalue our contributions, it’s crucial for us to make our well-being, happiness, and safety a priority.

In a world where our experiences are often ignored, it’s important to remind ourselves that we are worthy of the honor and love our existence deserves.
